about me
I grew up riding hunter jumpers and trail riding through the countryside of Stokes County NC. After graduating from high school, I decided to go to England and attend the Talland School of Equitation and become a riding instructor (BHSAI). After returning from England, I became a working student for an Olympic Dressage rider and began my professional journey as a dressage instructor. I taught college equestrian programs for Salem College and Wake Forest University as well as community classes, before branching out on my own as an independent riding instructor. I built my business and rode and trained horses professionally for many years, receiving accolades including the Violet Hopkins Scholarship, L-judging status, and many competition awards earned by riding some very special talented horses.
As I became older and my body started to change as well as my ambition as a rider, I decided to return to school and become a psychotherapist. I felt as if all the years of teaching riding prepared me for a helping profession geared toward helping people connect more fully with their horse partners. Today I not only continue to teach riding and ground skills in a kind and gentle way (yogic perspective), I also incorporate my horse training skills into my equine assisted psychotherapeutic practice. My teaching and psychotherapeutic practice has been a highlight of my career. In teaching equine assisted learning and riding and psychotherapeutic practices, I am horse centered and focus on relationship building, communication, sensitivity, awareness of self and other and try to bring the horse and person closer together in mind, body, and soul. To see clients and horses connect harmoniously is the essence of my work.
